As research for the MAIZE FIELD I planted two “Three Sisters Gardens” with northeastern-native, Iroquois varieties of corn, beans and squash. The three sisters garden is a traditional Native American
companion planting system. The three sisters refer to the three
crops corn, beans and squash. The beans fix nitrogen which is so
important to the corn and improve the overall fertility of the soil. The
squash keeps the soil moist and discourages predators. Nutritionally
these plants also compliment each other. Corn provides carbohydrates, beans provide protein and squashis rich in vitamins
and healthy oils.

These MAIZE FIELDS can be seen as a metaphor for community as well as an example of a traditional, holistic approach to food production. My three sister’s gardens have been growing this summer at the Lefferts House in Prospect Park and on the Waterpod. I’ve documented their progress from the beginning.

Your can see the progress of these gardens by clicking the links in the column to the left.
