Maize Field is a project proposed for the summer of 2010. My idea is to plant gardens of North Eastern-native varieties of corn, squash & beans, in areas where the Native Americans historically cultivated their maize fields. These areas include parts of Cobble Hill/Boerum Hill, Bensonhurst, and Canarsie in Brooklyn.

This summer (2009), in preparation for Maize Field, I am growing two gardens with native varieties of corn and beans. These gardens are located at the Lefferts House in Prospect Park, Brooklyn and on the Waterpod, a floating barge in NYC. Seeds from these gardens will be saved and used next year.

In Prospect Park at the Lefferts Homestead we are growing Iroquois shortnose white corn & Mohawk Vermont beans and yellow crookneck squash

On the Waterpod we are growing Gigi Hill blue flint corn and Onondaga yellow eye beans and white bush scallop squash.
