From Indian Paths in the Great Metropolis:

"This maize land, a native corn field, is stated by Teunis G. Bergen to have extended along the east side of Court street, between Atlantic avenue and Baltic. It was doubtless bounded on the westerly side by the trail that later became Red Hook lane, which made a sharp bend at Pacific street probably around the corner of the maize-field. It was known in 1642 as “Sassian’s maize -land”, and the natives continued its cultivation until that date, after which they probably sold it to Lubbersen, since in 1645 is was described as Frederick Lubbersen’s maize-land"

MAIZELAND, Boerum Hill, 10am Aug 7th: sketch of sunlight and potential green spaces for planting

Boerum Hill was once a fertile area for corn.Today the area provides special challenges for a Maize Field. It is so built up that it lacks
sunlight and open space, which is essential to growing corn.

I’d like to find a way to grow the corn as if coming out of cracks in the sidewalks, to give the impression that the historical corn fields are reasserting themselves.
Corn brace roots are an inspiration for a garden in the sidewalk. The historical maize field is asserting itself through cracks in the urban environment.
